What to Know Before Hiring a Roofing Contractor
Jun 08, 2022Unfortunately, there are some contractors out there who will take advantage of homeowners in order to make a quick buck. To avoid these malpractices, we compiled a list of what you should look out for when hiring a roofing contractor.
Poor Quality Materials:
While we understand that replacements can be expensive, choosing a cheaper material can turn out to be more expensive in the long run. Using material from brands such as Owen’s Corning can not only protect your home from the elements, but it can also up the value of your home! The materials on your home should last at least 20 years.
Layering Shingles:
When you are getting your roof replaced, the old shingles must be removed from your roof deck before new ones can be installed. If the shingles are not removed, moisture and dirt will stay on the shingles and will start to deteriorate, which will lead to repairs, and possibly a full replacement. To avoid this from happening, read your contract and make sure it says that the old shingles will be removed.
Improper Installation of Underlayment:
Before your shingles are installed, your roof contractor will install products that will help protect your roof from the elements. These will include materials such as; the underlayment, an ice and water barrier, flashings, etc (for more information check out our roof term blog). Unfortunately, there are contractors out there that will avoid installing these items to cut costs. Like we stated above, make sure these items are written in your contract to avoid any potential repairs.
Avoiding the Basics – Skipping Permits
In most cases, any work that is done to your home requires a permit before any work is done. This is to ensure that everything is following the local building codes. Without one, you can be fined and the work on your home can be stopped until the necessary permits are collected. To avoid this, make sure all permits are collected and properly placed in a visible location.
